Monday evening was spent shooting boys high school soccer between Monrovia High School and Oaks Christian. The Monrovia JV won 2-1 and the Varsity match ended in a 1-1 tie. Lots more high school soccer during the next couple months.

The Newbury Park U19 Boys B team wins the AYSO Section 10 regionals in Bakersfield this last weekend. Dotphoto Album. The team went 3-1-1 for the weekend. The finals against Ojai ended in a 1-1 tie with Newbury Park winning on PKs. Saturday scores were 4-0, 2-0 and 1-2. Sunday Newbury Park won the semifinals 4-0.

The Newbury Park AYSO U19 B team won last night 4-1 against the Simi Valley A team. The NP team went 8-0-0, winning first place going into the playoffs. I posted 58 photos this morning at DotPhoto.

Last night I photographed two Newbury ParkAYSO boys U19 matches. The U19 B team won 5-2, above. The U19C team, below, lost 3-2. For part of the U19C team, I played with a slow 1/30th shutter speed at ISO 100, panning while making exposures. There are 99 images in this dotphoto album.

Yes The Coaches Are Coming, The Coaches Are Coming.



On Sunday the coaches meet with AYSO staff and received housing assignments.

The British Coaching staff for the Major League Soccer summer soccer camp arrived in Newbury Park. This year our old soccer friends called and asked us to host two coaches for the week. My boys attended the summer camp over five years ago and we hosted coaches a twice back then.

Being soccer, I did not need an excuse to go this morning, shoot the first day of camp and put up a photo album.

The Newbury Park High School Varsity Soccer season ended Tuesday in a tough 1-2 loss to Santa Monica High School. After falling behind 0-1 at half time, NPHS dominated the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half and tied the score 1-1. Included in the comeback was a save on a Santa Monica PK by NPHS goalie Troy Williams that left Santa Monica players and fans shaking their heads. To Santa Monica's credit, they came back and scored the winning goal.

I overheard several Santa Monica HS fans and school officals saying this was the toughest game of the year for the 26-0 team that is rated #2 nationally. Frankly I was much more impressed by Santa Margarita last Saturday in the CIF Division 1 playoff finals. Santa Monica won the Division 4 finals, but acted susprised by how tough a CIF Division 1 team plays. Too bad Santa Margarita is playing in the CIF Regionals Division 2. Santa Monica was given a gitt. Santa Margarita has a much better defense and would beat Santa Monica.

The Newbury Park High School Boys Varsity Soccer lost the CIF finals 0-1 to Santa Margarita, but continues post season play in the CIF SoCal Regional Soccer Championships. NPHS plays Tuesday at 5pm against Santa Monical High School at Santa Monica City College.

Newbury Park High School Boys Varsity soccer team wins its CIF Semi Final match 1-0 in overtime. Goal was scored on a header by Junior Nick Harrison. (Yes - he is my son). I will admit I was so excited by the play, I forgot to take photos! I did get a couple reaction photos to the goal. Nick is on the left of this photo from after the game. But I had to work!



I found this sign in my front yard as I left for work Friday. The Newbury Park High School Boys Varsity Soccer team won an exciting game (by all accounts) on pks. Esperanza and NPHS were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. After two overtime and two sudden death periods they went to pks. NPHS players scored all four pks while the NPHS goalie blocked one and another Esperanza kick was wide. Sorry I missed this one!

Last weekend I attended a funeral in Nebraska for my Aunt Irene Carlson. More on that in a future post. Then the co-worker who usually could cover for me had to attend a funeral for his sister this week. With a touch of the flu thrown in, I was ready for good news last night. The NPHS soccer team came through!

On Monday all three Newbury Park boys soccer teams won - but only by one goal. The Frosh/soph and JV won 1-0, the Varsity won 3-2.

The boys games on Wednesday, January 9th, were cancelled because Simi Valley High School was without power. They entire campus was black. Newbury Park High School was also having its own outage - one of the four lighting towers at the stadium was out. It went out during Monday's games, but the stadium was still used on Monday and Wednesday for soccer. I suspect last weekend's heavy rains was the cause.

Wednesday night I took some photos from the well lite half of the stadium. The girls varsity tied 1-1 against Simi Valley. Enjoy.

Monday while shooting soccer at Newbury Park High School, I went to the east end of the field and shot a few frames of the sunset over the stadium.



Of course, during the sunset shoot the Newbury Park High School Junior Varsity gilrs scored this goal.

Tech notes: I shot the sunset with ISO set to 200 and the digital files saved in RAW format. Once in photoshop I made two copies of this image, one for the sky and one for the field, and merged using layers and a mask.

Last night I got to my first high school soccer game of the season. Oaks Christian beat Monrovia High School 1-0. Monrovia's soccer head coach Mike Williams was coach of the former Thousand Oaks based Apex Excel club team. So just for fun, several members of the old Apex team showed up, including my son Jon.

The Newbury Park AYSO U19 Boys A team won the area 10E championship 4-0 against the NP boys U19B team. The A team is coached by Steve McDaniel. The team is undefeated in regular season and the playoffs. Their only tie was against with the NP B team. The A team goes to the Section 10 Playoffs next weekend in Bakersfield. The NP B team was 2nd in both the regular season and during the tournament. The B team is coached by Eric Bordagaray.

Saturday the Newbury Park boys AYSO U19 A team played a day game. I was able to get 80 good photos from the match, unlike to 20 or so images from their night matches. The game was against Malibu next to the ocean- great spot. NP won 2-1. Enjoy. scott.

The Newbury Park Soccer Club U17 Alliance began the fall season with a tough 2-0 win over the Camarillo Eagles.

More and more I am using Photoshop Lightroom to prep the images. It's a time saver. I am able to quickly archive and apply global corrections to the images, Then I am able to output a complete web gallery - link below the photo.

Wednesday night was the start of the fall soccer season. The two Newbury Park AYSO U19 boys teams played each other to a 2-2 tie. Many of the players have been together for over ten years through AYSO, club and high school teams. Was fun to watch.

The game was played under the lights at a local park - a challenge to shoot. I was able to shoot at 1/160th a second at f/2.8 at 800iso. I shot raw format and used an 80-200 zoom lens. Only about one-third of the field is lit. The light on the rest of the field falls off rapidly.

I shoot raw as much as possible. For night sports I get about a one-stop increase in quality. Anyway, here is a photo gallery from last nite.

I was only able to shoot one of three Alliance matches this last weekend during the El Camino Real Thousand Oaks Classic soccer tournament. The Alliance won two and lost one during the tournament.

The Alliance U17 Boys soccer team played in a tournament in San Diego over the last weekend. The Alliance won two matches and lost one. The field was on Coronado Island at the local high school stadium. Great location. Enjoy the photos!

The boys NPSC U16 Alliance won the Condors Fun in the Sun tournament in San Luis Obispo over the weekend of June 23 and 24th. The scores were 1-0, 1-1, 8-0 and 7-0. The tie was with Bakersfield Gunners, a Silver Elite team. The Gunners and Alliance both ended the tournament with 31 points, but the Alliance won on the tiebreaker rule of fewest goals allowed - one versus two. The matches were at Nipomo High School.

The Newbury Park Scocer Club Alliance boys U16 team played in the Camarillo Wings tournament over the weekend of June 9-10th, 2007. The Alliance went 1-2-1 in the tournament with scores of 2-3. 0-1, 0-0 and 2-1. They ended up in 5th place. The competition was so close that only two additional goals over the 4 games could have meant first place.

The Newbury Park Scocer Club Alliance won the Conejo Valley United tournament U16B bracket yesterday. The NPSC Alliance went 2-1 in the prelim games and then won the final 1-0. Nick Harrison scored the only goal in the finals match against FCI United of Diamond Bar. FCI United had beaten the Alliance 2-1 in a prelim game on Saturday.

Photo Tech: Most daytime soccer photos shot with Canon D20 set on RAW + JPG with 300mm f/4 lens. ISO 200, shutter priority 1/1250th sec or higher to keep aperture open for shallow depth of field. I usually use a monopod.

The U16B NPSC Alliance won the 2007 Chivas Simi Valley Invitational Cup with a 2-0-1 record. The tie was against Apex Boys 90 Futbolistas. Nick Harrison had a good weekend with three goals - one in each game. Scores were 2-0, 1-1, 2-1.
