I just finished posting about 30 images to dotphoto
of the Boys U17 Alliance team in the Real California
Tournament. They played U18 and U19 teams, lost two
and won one game. Enjoy. Scott

Backup Blues
26/07/07 00:21 Just
FYI
Its been over a week since any postings. No photos
today, just my Backup Blues story of woe.
I have backed up all files for years on to duplicate copies of DVDs. With Lightroom I decided to build up a full library of my favorite images onto a hard drive with a second external drive as a backup. On Monday, July 16th, I had both drives on doing backups. Of course I got hit with a city-wide blackout.
The main drive died within 24 hours. The external box it was in also had its circuits fried. When I turned to the backup drive, its directory was scrambled. The drive was recovered, but all files lost. I could recover individual files, but that was useless as all folders, file names etc that are important to having a Lightroom catalogue was lost.
So after a week of trying different recovery options, I am back to going through my DVDs to rebuild a new Lightroom catalogue. Actually with version 1.1, is easier to do mini-catalogues - so each catalogue will stay under 4-gigs. I will now back them up to DVD in addition to a backup external drive.
What was lost, was many hours of work building a photo library, including a couple of personal projects. Now I start over.
Live and Learn - remember that a hard drive always dies, just a matter of when.

Bend Oregon

Its been a slow weekend allowing me to go back to
images from a March, 2007, trip to Bend, Oregon, to
see family members. Of course I took some images in
my spare time, my favorite being the landing at night
at Los Angeles International Airport.
The prop-jet aircraft wheels extended from the engine pods. This allowed me to frame the right wheel with Los Angeles lights. I used a series of long exposures to catch the aircraft strobe lighting the wheel. This was my favorite image of the landing and of the trip. Tech stuff: 18-55mm lens at 18mm, f/3.5, 1/4th second, 200ISO, Canon Rebel.

Working on Family Images
13/07/07 00:10 Family Images
Many photographers end up being keepers of their
extended family images. I have that same never-ending
project. Several years ago my mother sent me several
roles of black and white negs to see what was on
them. Sure enough I found this image of my father and
I.
Harold Harrison and Son, 1951.
Photoshop is still the main tool for working on family images, but I am turning more and more to working in Photoshop Lightroom (LR). I have been slowly moving my photo files onto one hard drive and using LR to build several libraries - including a family library. Each image is kept intact as changes are only applied when an image is exported. I am a big believer in this non-destructive workflow. I don't have to jump from app to app to do editing, color correction, printing, web galleries and slideshows.

Green City Hall

Los Angeles City Hall has gone green. The flags and lights on left are at the Eli and Edyhe Broad Plaza of the CalTrans building.
Yes the lights are green. On July 2nd Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa officially change the lights on City Hall, the Griffith Park Observatory and the LAX pillars to green to kick off global support for *Live Earth.* I checked several blogs and found the press release here....

I had a free evening so I took off to Camarillo to
cruise around with my camera.
