Nov. 5, 2018: On Jan. 9, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt established Muir Woods National Monument in 1908. The year before, owner William Kent donated the land to the Federal Government. Kent saved the virgin Redwood forest from a local water company that wanted to dam and flood the location. He suggested naming the site after naturalist John Muir.
