Portrait of a Boston Haymarket vendor and his granddaughter during a busy day in May 1979. The open-air market operates from dawn to dusk on Fridays and Saturdays. The Haymarket Pushcart Association runs the market, which dates back to colonial days.
May 12, 2017: After an aerial tour, a seaplane returns to Juneau, Alaska. Seaplane flights for tourists land and depart from a pier in downtown Juneau, right next to where the cruise ships dock.
May 10, 2017: Mountains overlooking the Endicott Arm fjord in Alaska reflected in Carnival Legend cruise ship windows. Endicott Arm and twin Tracy Arm are 30-mile long fjords located in the Tracy Arm-Fjords Terror Wilderness south of Juneau, Alaska. During this cruise, an ice-clogged Tracy Arm forced the Carnival Legend into the Endicott Arm fjord.
March 26, 2017: Visitors take photos of the flowers at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve. Reports from the park's website report a few poppies starting to bloom. But the peak is still about a month away. Even in dry years, this location usually has plenty of flowers to see. Tip: go very early in the morning to get good parking. Later arrivals often have a long walk - a mile - to get to the entrance.
Yesterday I checked out the Tuba Tree in Placentia, California. The Roadside America application described, "A front yard pepper tree is festooned with tubas, sousaphones, and a wayward trombone."
After I started taking a few photos, out walked the owner - Stan Freese, the former Disneyland Director of Bands. Over his multi-decade career, many musical instruments passed through his hands. Several ended up in his Tuba Tree.
May 15, 2017: Frog made out a towel on Carnival Legend cruise to Alaska. I loved the towel animals found daily in our cabin, but a Google search was distressing. A couple of 2019 stories report some cruise lines are discontinuing towel animals. It seems the stewards are too busy. But if you ask for towel animals, most stewards will create them. I left a larger tip
March 11, 2017: A full moon rises behind King Kong and a dinosaur at Peggy Sue's 50's Diner east of Barstow, California. The restaurant started as a roadside pie shop in 1954. Besides the 1950s menu, Peggy Sue's features an extensive collection of 50s memorabilia, gift shop, and dinosaur collection. A must stop while en-route to Las Vegas
April 22, 2017: During a rare weekend event, the Collings Foundation B-17 and Commemorative Air Force B-29 were both at the Camarillo, California airport. The CAF B-29 "FiFi" lands in the background. The Collings "Nine-O-Nine, "foreground, was destroyed in an October 2, 2019, crash in Windsor Lock, Connecticut. The aircraft were on separate nationwide tours that randomly overlapped at the Camarillo airport.
My thoughts on images past and present.
